Description

The Southern Methodist University Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering invites applications for one full-time tenure track Assistant Professor. The technical areas of primary interest for this position are in biomedical sensors and systems, machine learning, signal processing, neuromorphic computing, and computer engineering for health-related applications. Exceptional candidates in the aforementioned areas will be prioritized, although exceptional candidates from closely-related areas of interest within Electrical and Computer Engineering will be considered. This position is part of a cluster hire in Data Science and is one of twelve positions allocated to the cluster around three areas of focus: Data Core, Health Analytics, and Technology and Education. The multi- faculty hire represents an ambitious program to develop large-scale collaborative research projects responding to some of humankind’s most daunting challenges. This position is associated with the Health Analytics group that includes positions in three other Departments at SMU: Biological Sciences, Psychology, and Applied Physiology and Sports Management. The candidate is expected to collaborate with other faculty in the Health Analytics and Data Core groups with the goal of acquiring and/or employing data that can help us further identify, understand, and control the burden of health-related challenges.

SMU is designated as a preferred employer in the Dallas/Forth Worth metroplex, one of the most prolific high-tech industrial centers in the country. The Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex is a multi-faceted business and engineering community, offering exceptional museums, diverse cultural attractions and a vibrant economy. Dallas’ quality of life is exceptional with a relatively low cost of living, upscale apartments and homes within walking distance of campus, the opportunity to live in the city or out in the country with a relatively short commute, and the availability of both mass transit systems and plentiful on-campus parking.

Requirements

Successful candidates must have a PhD degree in Electrical and/or Computer Engineering or a related field, and are expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses as well as to develop an innovative, externally-funded research program. Successful candidates will be expected to supervise Master’s and Doctoral students and participate in interdisciplinary efforts within the School. Exceptional candidates with a proven track record will also be considered at the tenured Associate Professor level. SMU is a private university dedicated to academic excellence. Located in Dallas, SMU maintains a moderate size of about 11,000 students. The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department resides within the Lyle School of Engineering and is located in the Jerry R. Junkins Building, which houses a research laboratory complex with a 2,800 square foot Class 10,000 cleanroom. The Department offers the B.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering; M.S. and Ph. D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering; and a M.S. degree in Network Engineering.
