Company History

The firm was founded in 1956 by Gerald Kasin and Karl Guttmann as Kasin, Guttmann, and Associates. It quickly established itself as a leading designer of hospitals and schools in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1977, Gerald Kasin retired, and the firm transitioned to Guttmann & MacRitchie based on a new partnership between Karl Guttmann and Norman MacRitchie. The firm continued to hold a leadership position in the delivery of hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout California. In the mid-1980’s the firm had the opportunity to design the flagship production facility at George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch, and went on to design Lucafilm’s expansion into the neighboring property known as Big Rock Ranch. The firm grew and diversified its portfolio, and in 1997, the firm transitioned to Guttmann & Blaevoet in recognition of the new partnership between Steven Guttmann and Jeff Blaevoet. Since 1997, the firm has established itself as a leader in the design and delivery of high performance buildings that work.

Notable Accomplishments / Recognition

Guttmann & Blaevoet has been delivering buildings that work since 1956. Our early commissioning work was less formal than what we know today as Best Practices commissioning, and was focused on buildings that we designed, including the Outer Bay Wing at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, San Francisco International Airport Boarding Area A, and hospitals and libraries all over Northern California. Since 1997, Guttmann and Blaevoet has been focused on delivering high performance buildings. Our work has been recognized with ASHRAE Technology Awards (Local, Regional and National) over 25 times since 2003 for exceptional designs that deliver outstanding performance. We have been providing formal commissioning services since 2001.
