Company History

Founded in 2001, Johnston is a multi-talented firm based in Houston that provides project/program management, architectural design and MEP engineering design services that span all disciplines and project phases.

In October 2021, Johnston acquired MJDII, integrating two client-centric firms who have similar values, diversity and culture, while keeping those values top of mind: Trust. Respect. Integrity.

Johnston and MJDII, with over 40 years of combined experience, have expertise in advancing technology, industrial, manufacturing, aviation and research facilities, as well as for healthcare, government and commercial clients. The ability to offer our clients architecture and MEP engineering services and the addition of exceptional talent to both teams bring increased value for our customers.

We offer flexible schedules, Work from Home (WFH) Tuesday & Friday, and ½ day Fridays.
Along with a generous PTO policy (19 days awarded January 1 or pro-rated at hire date), we also offer our full-time employees:

We believe in transparency. Each year, we work with department leaders to develop a strategic plan to share with our people. In the plan, we share details of our business development, financial, and human resource goals for the year. This gives all employees the opportunity to see how they fit into the big picture and how their contributions make a difference.

It is important, as we hire, to maintain the vision of the company and set every employee on a path to success. This begins day one with on-boarding. Learning our processes, standards, and team expectations. Whether they are a seasoned professional or recent graduate, learning about Johnston’s focus on teamwork and our way of delivering quality work will get them started on the right foot. We conduct a 90-day check-in to solicit feedback to ensure they have the proper resources to make sure their integration into the company and culture is seamless. It is our goal to provide our new team members with a positive experience they will appreciate and remember.

We offer a “Career Path” program which allows additional one-on-one checkpoints with management throughout the year to help employees stretch their abilities and take on increasing responsibility to move forward in their career. This also includes a $500 allowance for Professional Development to be used for professional preparation courses and/or materials as well as professional registration fees.
Our goal is to become the best company to work for in our industry. To achieve this, we focus on hiring great people and, more importantly, retaining the great people we have today. We have developed a compensation and benefits strategy that includes a “Pay for Performance” model to fairly reward our high performers. We offer competitive salaries and have been successful enough to be able to provide bonuses each year as well as a 10% discretionary 401k match.

Let’s talk about the fun! We also offer our staff unlimited snacks such as fruit, nuts, sports bars, chips, etc., coffee (lattes included), and bottled water. We have monthly birthday and anniversary celebrations as well as bingo with gift cards for the winners and even a monthly Drawful online game during lunch. Quarterly, we have Employee Appreciation breakfasts and lunches. This year we started a book exchange as well as a book club and have read and reviewed five books so far. For the physically ambitious employees, we have a gym on the 2nd floor of our office building available for use and we also have after-hours workout sessions twice a week led by our very own Director of Business Development and a new after-hours Pilates session once a week led by another one of our staff members.

We understand that it is our corporate social responsibility to give back to the community and have participated in community volunteer activities for the Houston Food Bank and Kid’s Meals on selected Fridays, allowing the staff paid volunteer time.
