Company History
The Kroeschell story starts on the busy streets of Chicago in 1879, shortly after the Great Fire that nearly destroyed America’s Second City. It was then that the four industrious sons of Herman Kroeschell, a recent German immigrant, founded the Kroeschell Brothers Company and started a company that would become a recognized industry leader.
While Kroeschell has its roots in boiler manufacturing, the Kroeschell brothers were among the first to embrace cooling technology, founding the Kroeschell Brothers Ice Machine Company shortly thereafter. By the close of the 19th century, they had become the first company in America to design, manufacture and install CO2 refrigeration equipment up to 250 tons in capacity. And in 1906 their reputation was further enhanced when they designed, built and installed the air-cooling system in the Congress Hotel, broadly recognized as the first commercial air conditioning system in America.
As a result of the Wall Street Crash of October 1929, Brunswick Refrigeration Company, York Heating and Ventilation and Carrier Engineering merged together to create the world-famous Carrier Corporation. However, four executives — including Robert and Paul Kroeschell — resigned from the large conglomerate to form the Kroeschell Engineering Company.
Even in its formative years, the new company was ambitious, landing the contract to cool Chicago’s famous Tribune Tower in 1934. Using a 600-ton chiller that supplied nearly 400 Westinghouse space air conditioners on 32-floors, Kroeschell quickly completed a job described by Westinghouse as “one of the largest unit air conditioning installations in the world.”
Through continual innovation and acquisition, Kroeschell has grown far beyond its original roots, becoming more than a distinguished leader in heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Through its three distinct divisions, Kroeschell has become a global business partner, providing mechanical and electrical engineering solutions and industrial support for companies across the country and around the world.
